Today I'm going to share a quick activity called five senses. It's great for teaching English learners. You can use it as a quick warm-up or kind of a time filler. There are a ton of different ways to use this activity. You just have to bring an object into the class and I'll use the example of a can of coke and then students have to think about their five senses and then use words to describe that object. So I usually put students into pairs or groups of three or four and they can do this either by speaking or by writing. It's up to you, it doesn't matter for this activity. For example, I'm kind of doing this on the fly so be kind! Anyway, the can of coke, sight or seeing. If you look at the can, you could use colours to describe it like red and white, the writing on it you could describe that. You could say it's like a cylinder or like a tube it's like. It looks metallic on the top. Any of those words, so just kind of descriptive words to describe it. The smell, you could say it smells kind of like sweet or licoricey or I don't know. I feel like it tastes or smells a little bit like metallic or something because of the cans when you first put it to your mouth so any of those words. It tastes, I don't know, I don't like coke that much so I think it tastes bitter and like kind of harsh. Some people think it tastes sweet, and some people think it tastes delicious. I don't know, there are a million words you could use to describe how coke tastes or like fizzy. Fizzy I guess is really another good word. And then touch, touch is interesting you could say like it's liquidy or it's like fizzy or bubbly or yeah, so there are lots of words for that. Hearing is the last sense. So you could say like when you open the can, like the pop or like a pop or snap or something like that. Then when all the fizz comes out, it's kind of just like a rush of air or like a bubbly sound or something like that. You can do this with any object and of course, not all the things might apply so if you don't do a food or drink, obviously taste is kind of a weird, weird one because like who's gonna lick an eraser or like taste an eraser or a pencil or whatever. So you could just say like turn it into the four senses activity instead of the five senses or whatever, you know. Okay, so that's just a simple activity that is a time filler or warm-up. Try it out with your students and I think you'll like it. I always have a really good time and my students always come up with very creative words and they're actually way better at it than I am. I should have actually filmed them doing this for this video because my words are not as amazing as what they come up with usually. A common question that I get from teachers is what to do with absolute beginners. If you have a group of students in your class who basically know essentially no English, how do you go about teaching them? One of my favourite ESL teaching strategies for this level of student, the absolute beginner is working on phonics. I know that's a bit controversial. I think there's definitely a camp of people who would say when we're babies when we're first learning a language, we learn by listening first, then speaking and then finally we learn reading and then writing after that. I agree, however, I think the foundation of learning a language is phonics and learning how to read. I've honestly, in my whole 15 years of teaching English, I've never met a student who was I would say fluent in English without being proficient in reading. Reading is so necessary for working on vocabulary. Of course, you can't write if you can't read well. As well, reading is key to understanding what's happening in the world around us. If you want to study in a formal class, you'll be using a textbook of some kind, which requires reading skills. I mean, you can possibly be quite good at speaking and listening and be even fluent in speaking without being able to read well. Of course, it's normal for people in all countries, there are illiterate people who obviously can listen and speak perfectly but may not be able to read. However, that's kind of the exception and yes, for a language teacher or language learner, I honestly don't think that's the best strategy. So teachers, if you have absolute beginners and have no idea what to do, my advice is to focus on phonics and reading skills. That way students can learn vocabulary on their own, they can review what you've taught them at home, they can start reading simple English books or newspapers, they can start doing extensive reading, and they can study for tests easily if you're going to give tests in your class, they can do all sorts of stuff like that. So if you're new to teaching English, this is the video for you. My first tip is names. It's very very difficult to conduct a class if you don't know the student's names. You won't be able to really ask specific students questions. If someone is misbehaving, it's difficult to address unless you actually know their name. Have students write up a little name tag and put it on their desks. I kind of do the name tag on the desk thing. I just find it easier than a seating chart. The second one is to use lots of review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uiMLCv0AdI&). So I personally would rather my students know a few things very very well than a million things not really at all by the time they leave my class. If you have a textbook, you may feel like you're kind of forced to just power through the textbook over the course of the semester. Focus on a few things in that textbook and don't feel like you need to cover every single activity. The next tip is to set some goals. Find out why students are studying English and then tailor your classes towards that. If students feel like they're achieving what they want out of that class, it's going to go much more smoothly instead of you trying to impose what you think they should be learning. The next thing is to create a lesson plan. I know it's tempting to just kind of walk into class with a textbook and just kind of open it up and say, what are we doing? Or, just kind of chit-chat with students. Come to class with at least a basic lesson plan. The next tip is that teaching is all about a relationship. So do whatever you can to kind of foster a good relationship with your students. I won't say bribe them but I mean if it's their birthday like bring in a little snack or a gift and like you can sing Happy Birthday to them. It can go a really, really long way towards this kind of fostering a good class environment. The next one is to use a variety of activities and games. So nobody really likes doing the same thing over and over and over and over again in a language class. However, the next tip is all about routine. I know I just said to use a ton of activities and that's true, but you should also have some sort of routine. People also don't like when it's very random and then when they come into class, they have no idea what to expect. Have routines for things like how to take attendance, how to collect papers, and how to clean up for the day. The next tip is to use ICQs. ICQs are instruction-checking questions. These are very simple questions that you would ask students after you've given instructions. For example, how many students are on your team? Four. Check to make sure the students have understood what you've told them before you turn them loose to go do their activity or game or whatever they're doing. The next one is CCQs. These are concept-checking questions. I would say, for example, I didn't ate? And students would say, no I didn't eat. That kind of thing. You're just checking what you taught them just to make sure they've 100% understood. The last one is positive reinforcement. You know in every class, there's the class clown. I choose things to call out that are not negative. For example, you worked so well as a team. Great job. Or, you did a really nice job on that assignment or worksheet. Focus on the positive. Those are my top 10 tips for new ESL teachers. Alright, my first one is, is that sentence correct? This is a very simple grammar activity or it could also be used for vocabulary review. I write down some sentences, maybe around three or four or five sentences, depending on the level. Maybe very absolute beginners could handle maybe one sentence at a time. Some of them have mistakes and some of them don't. I put students into pairs and they have to discuss with their partners which sentences are incorrect and then what changes they would like to make it correct. The next one is surveys. High beginners can do surveys. If you like, or if you click the link down below, you can find out more about surveys on my website and how I make them. But basically, students have to circulate around the classroom to find someone who answers yes to one of their questions. For example, do you like ice cream? Do you have a brother? Sorry, that's my cat Lucy in the background! Are you from Busan? etc. And then once they find that person who answers yes to that question, they have to ask a follow-up question. For example, what's your favourite kind of ice cream? The next one is concentration. This is ideal for beginners who are learning new vocabulary words. I'll make up a bunch of cards and the way I do it depends on kind of the level. Some of them all have like a picture and then the vocabulary word or the word and then a description or opposites or something like that. Then I put students into groups of four and they place the cards face down in a random fashion. The first student chooses two cards. If they match, they keep them. If they don't match, they put them back in the same spot and then it becomes a memory game. Students can keep playing until they have used up all the cards, or all the cards are complete and this can lead to a whole bunch of other things. The next one is a story timeline. This is nice for beginners. You can find a simple story and then put each sentence or each action that happens on a separate piece of paper and then students can go in small groups and they can put the story into the correct order. The next one is videos. I love to use videos in my classes. Obviously, students love them but it's key to get the most educational value out of them. There are a few different things I do when I use them in my class for beginners. One is to use them to generate interest in a topic. I'll find a video and use that to set the context and use it as kind of a lead-in. We'll watch the short video and then I'll ask some questions or they can talk with their partner about it, or just shout out some words that they know from what they saw in the video, etc., something like that. I also like to use videos as a way if we, for example, are talking about the weather, I'll find a video of two people talking about the weather and then I'll ask students to listen and then write down every word related to weather that you hear. It can be a nice lead-in or it could be a nice review activity as well. Those are my favourite ESL activities for beginners. It also can be easily adapted to make it as easy or as difficult as you want, depending on the level of students. It's called name five things. Put students into pairs or groups of three or four and then each group needs a piece of paper and a pen. And then you could say, name five animals and then the first team to quickly write down five animals puts up their hand and you can check and that team gets a point. So that is a very simple one. Kind of a little bit more difficult would be name five farm animals. And the next level would be name five animals that are bigger than a car. So, just as hard or as easy as you want to make it. There are also some other variations or some other options that you can do and you can get creative but here are just a few more ideas for you. Name five foods, or name five red foods. Name five Christmas foods, something like that. Or, name five drinks, name five cold drinks. name five drinks that you might get at a bar, something like that. The sky is the limit. Get creative and use your imagination and you can even get students to help you come up with ideas for this game. If you like these ideas, please be sure to check out my book 39 ESL Icebreakers. ICQs are instruction checking questions. After you explain or demonstrate an activity I like to ask questions so, for example, they should be yes or no questions. For example, "how long do you have for the activity?" Two minutes. "How many people are in your group?" Four people. "Do you need to write your answer or say your answer to your partner?" Oh I have to write my answer. Anything related to that. You could also do concept-checking questions. If you teach a concept, like the simple past for example. These are simple yes-no questions related to the content that you teach and not the instructions, so use both of these liberally in your classes.
