So today, I'm going to share a few quick tips for teaching English ESL, EFL, whatever you want to call it, either in your home country or in a different country. First, I have three do's. The first do is to make it student-centred. Remember that the students are the ones who need to learn english. You are already quite good at English if you are a teacher so students should be doing the hard work, not you. Choose games, activities, and things to do in class where the students are talking and interacting with each other. Writing, reading, listening, as long as they're doing most of the work, then you'll be good to go. Alright, the second one. Always have a lesson plan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcTLTCjtRJo&t=1s). I know it can be tempting and even students will sometimes say that they want this. They just want to do free talking.. They want to do free talking. However, it's not actually the best for the students. Each lesson you go into should have a focus. It should be like a particular grammar point or a vocabulary set or to work on some sort of reading skill or writing skill, etc. Always keep that in mind. Third, have some fun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mymqu9kimsY&t=3s), of course, when you're teaching. Nobody likes a boring teacher, a boring lesson. So yeah, include some games and activities in your classes to make learning English fun for the students and of course mix things up as well. Let's get into the don'ts for teaching English. The first one is don't talk too much. This kind of goes into the other thing I mentioned about student-centred teaching but whatever you do, the students should be talking more. If you have say more than three students in your class, get the students talking to each other instead of to you. That will increase student talking time and decrease teacher talking time which is the goal of any language class. Number two: don't do the same old thing every day. The same old thing often involves powering through a textbook, day after day, after day which can get really boring for the teacher as well as the students so mix things up. Bring some interesting games and activities into your classroom. Number three: don't be tempted to cover too much. My theory about teaching English is that it's better if students know a few things really well than everything kind of not at all. So review a lot. That's my plan and also just slow down a little bit, give students time to process, to understand. So while doing that, combined with review means they'll leave your class with some solid things to grasp.

Today i'm going to give you my top 10 tips for teaching young learners english or esl or efl tefl that kind of thing. My first tip for teaching young learners is to have a routine. So everything should have a routine: how to take out your book out of your bag, how to use your pencil, how to sharpen your pencil, how to line up to go eat lunch, how to go out for recess, how to come back into the classroom, how to get ready to go home at the end of the day, etc. My 2nd tip for teaching young learners is to lower your expectations. I taught in a Hogwan which is kind of like a private cram school in Korea. In my very first year there, they were kindergarten students but they started kindergarten earlier in Korea. 3rd is songs and chants. Kids love songs and chants. You can find a song for kids for any topic, any grammar point, etc. My 4th tip for teaching young learners is to use games and activities and use a wide variety of them. I never teach kids without this. Number 6 is to review a lot. This is like any age language learner you need lots of reviews so don't be scared to kind of do the same thing every day. Review days of the week, everyday review colors, animals, numbers that kind of thing. Students have to hear it like 5 or 10 or 15 or some students the slower ones 20, 25, 30 times before it can really stick in their heads. Number seven when teaching young learners, is to use a textbook. It can be a bit overwhelming to go into class every single day and kind of feel like "what am I going to do?" I have this bingo game, this book and kind of putting together these random lessons. Number eight, my tip for teaching young learners is vocabulary. When you're learning a language you need vocabulary. It doesn't matter how good your grammar skills are, if you don't have that word ready to go, you can't talk. Number 10 is flashcards. I will never go into a young learner class without flashcards, it's like my security blanket. There's a whole bunch of games you could even just like for very beginners. Show the card, "what is it? It's a cat" or you can play games. So today I'm going to talk about the top five tips that I have for teaching ESL or EFL to teenagers. The first tip I have for teaching ESL to teens is to not take things personally. as you know when you're a teen yourself or maybe you have some other teens in your life, hormones are a real thing. They're going through ups and downs, and their emotions are all kind of wacky so that means when you have a group full of teenagers in your class, there's often a lot of drama. Maybe people are crying, people are angry and most of the time it has absolutely nothing to do with you. so if a student is having a hard time in your class, have some empathy and don't take it personally. Their bad behaviour or their bad mood likely has nothing to do with what you're actually doing in class so just take it all with a grain of salt and kind of let it roll off your back if possible. All right the second tip I have for teaching ESL to teenagers is that student needs vary considerably. Think about people in high school. If some students are maybe going to an English-speaking university, obviously their needs are very, very different from someone who's going to a technical college to study car mechanics in their own country. Definitely do a needs assessment and try to meet students' needs. Do they have to prepare for the IELTS exam? Are they going to Canada or the USA to study, or are they just staying in their own country and maybe just want to like be able to say hello to a foreigner that they happen to see on the street? Definitely check with them and find out. The third tip I have for teaching teens is to build a relationship based on mutual respect. Definitely give your students some respect and they'll also respect you back. That said, I have some rules for sure. Things like cell phones and food and drinks. Whatever is appropriate in your teaching environment and enforce them but also don't be overly strict as well. I'm saying aim for the happy medium and your class will go much more smoothly. The fourth tip I have for teaching ESL to teens is to choose relevant topics and interests. No teenager is gonna love talking about, for example cooking a four-course meal. Probably that's more of the interest of like the 30 and 40 and 50-year-olds that you might be teaching. Teenagers, probably their parents just cook for them all the time so doing a whole unit on cooking, they're probably not that interested but if you do say a unit on fast food and the impact it might have on kids. Should teenagers and children be eating fast food? Should fast-food companies advertise to kids? Stuff like that would be interesting I think to teenagers because it would be relevant to them. Alright, the fifth tip I have for teaching ESL to teenagers is to use a variety of games and activities. Don't do the same thing every day in your class for sure. That will get boring super quickly and your students will start to use their cell phones to chat with their friends, start to sleep, whatever they're going to do that's not listening to you or not participating in your class. I'm an ESL teacher but these tips could apply basically to any situation in which you're teaching. And so the first one is positive reinforcement versus negative reinforcement. I try to focus on the positive things that students are doing. For example, you work so well together. The next thing is a reward system. So this is a little bit tricky. I'm like what should the motivation for students be? should it be to get a little candy at the end of class or should it be to actually learn something? However, reward systems do certainly have a place in the classroom. So I would often do this for children if I'm teaching them for example, over a summer or winter camp. And I would kind of give them little points for good behaviour for like a really good performance on a little activity that we did and even just for being like a very nice person. For example, picking up some trash without me asking them. The next one is to create interesting lessons (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQtyRC5gBkg&t=1s). Choose topics that students are interested in. Of course, if you're choosing topics that students are not interested in, you will not have a positive classroom environment. People will be kind of negative and just kind of uninspired to talk about or discuss whatever the topic of the day is. The next thing to create a positive classroom environment is to make your expectations very clear. If students aren't really sure what you expect from them, how can they live up to those expectations? So set your expectations high and then enforce them. I don't mean to enforce them in kind of like a mean, angry way but just remind students of what you expect. Please put your cell phone in your pocket. Remember we don't use cell phones in our class. Or, please come on time. Remember that we start class on time. The next one is to pay attention to the physical environment in your classroom. If people are too hot or too cold or sitting next to someone they hate, they're not gonna like your class. So have a comfortable environment and do all that you can to ensure that people are interacting and talking with people that they actually like and people that they get along with because that will go a long way to creating a better environment in your class. The next tip is to enlist troublemakers. So I don't like to give the troublemakers in my class negative attention. It just kind of feeds into it a little bit I think and then they end up doing worse things in the end if I'm always paying attention to their negative behaviour. So instead, I generally will get them to sit in the front row and then I'll say, Bob, yeah please hand out these papers. And finally, ask students for feedback. So this can kind of happen throughout the semester and then I also do it at the end of the semester in order to improve my classes in the future. I will often ask students maybe just on the midterm exam or the final exam what their favourite part of the class was and what was one thing that they didn't really like about the class. So if you're new to teaching English, this is the video for you. My first tip is names. It's very very difficult to conduct a class if you don't know the student's names. You won't be able to really ask specific students questions. If someone is misbehaving, it's difficult to address unless you actually know their name. Have students write up a little name tag and put it on their desks. I kind of do the name tag on the desk thing. I just find it easier than a seating chart. The second one is to use lots of review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uiMLCv0AdI&). So I personally would rather my students know a few things very very well than a million things not really at all by the time they leave my class. If you have a textbook, you may feel like you're kind of forced to just power through the textbook over the course of the semester. Focus on a few things in that textbook and don't feel like you need to cover every single activity. The next tip is to set some goals. Find out why students are studying English and then tailor your classes towards that. If students feel like they're achieving what they want out of that class, it's going to go much more smoothly instead of you trying to impose what you think they should be learning. The next thing is to create a lesson plan. I know it's tempting to just kind of walk into class with a textbook and just kind of open it up and say, what are we doing? Or, just kind of chit-chat with students. Come to class with at least a basic lesson plan. The next tip is that teaching is all about a relationship. So do whatever you can to kind of foster a good relationship with your students. I won't say bribe them but I mean if it's their birthday like bring in a little snack or a gift and like you can sing Happy Birthday to them. It can go a really, really long way towards this kind of fostering a good class environment. The next one is to use a variety of activities and games. So nobody really likes doing the same thing over and over and over and over again in a language class. However, the next tip is all about routine. I know I just said to use a ton of activities and that's true, but you should also have some sort of routine. People also don't like when it's very random and then when they come into class, they have no idea what to expect. Have routines for things like how to take attendance, how to collect papers, and how to clean up for the day. The next tip is to use ICQs. ICQs are instruction-checking questions. These are very simple questions that you would ask students after you've given instructions. For example, how many students are on your team? Four. Check to make sure the students have understood what you've told them before you turn them loose to go do their activity or game or whatever they're doing. The next one is CCQs. These are concept-checking questions. I would say, for example, I didn't ate? And students would say, no I didn't eat. That kind of thing. You're just checking what you taught them just to make sure they've 100% understood. The last one is positive reinforcement. You know in every class, there's the class clown. I choose things to call out that are not negative. For example, you worked so well as a team. Great job. Or, you did a really nice job on that assignment or worksheet. Focus on the positive. As you know when you're a teen yourself or maybe you have some other teens in your life, hormones are a real thing. They're going through ups and downs. Their emotions are all kind of wacky. So that means when you have a group full of teenagers in your class, there's often a lot of drama. Maybe people are crying, people are angry and it most of the time it has absolutely nothing to do with you. So if a student is having a hard time in your class, have some empathy and don't take it personally. Their bad behaviour or their bad mood likely has nothing to do with what you're actually doing in class. So just take it all with a grain of salt and kind of let it roll off your back if possible. So today I have my top five tips for teaching conversational English classes or ESL/EFL/TEFL classes, etc. My first tip is to make it as student-centred as possible. This is something that I always thought, that my classes were student-centred but I took the CELTA course and my tutor actually challenged me. He just said you know what, it is student-centred but you could make it a lot more of that. The way I think about it is that I try to get my students talking and participating, writing, reading, listening, and doing things as much as possible. They need more practice with English, not me. So any time I'm at the front of the class talking, I think, can I minimize this? Can I get my students doing the hard work and not me? Just keep that in the back of your mind. The next one for conversational English is to teach students to ask follow-up questions. It's kind of a weakness of many students. It's easy to get in the habit of the teacher asking a question, how are you? I'm good. How's the weather? It's sunny. What are you doing this weekend? Oh, I'm playing soccer. And students never really ask questions back and they also aren't great at asking follow-up questions. Who do you play soccer with? Or, if the answer is, I'm gonna catch a movie, then, what movie are you watching? Just simple things like that. The next one is error correction. So error correction is a little bit tricky in a conversational English class. It's a bit demoralizing, especially for beginners if you correct every single error that students make. And I mean, I get it. I've been there in my language studies. Just a general kind of rule that I have. I actually have two general rules. The first one is that I correct all errors related to the target language. Wo if we're studying or I'm teaching about the simple past, I'll correct all errors related to the simple past. Another rule that I have is that I'll correct errors related to something we've already just covered in that class, say in the past week or two. If I'm teaching about maybe the future tense, but the previous week we'd covered the simple past and a student made a simple past error, I'd probably just quickly remind them about that. So the next tip for teaching conversational English is to set the context. By setting the context I mean you can teach the simple past, the present continuous, whatever you're teaching but students need a reason to use that language or a situation in which they can use the language by setting the context. There are various ways to do it. You can tell a story, get students to talk about a little topic related to what you're teaching, do a little warm-up game or activity, make a prediction about maybe like a headline they see in the text, they can watch a little bit of a video and then you stop the video and students can predict what's going to happen. The final tip that I have is to review. Repetition is key. I'm not sure of the exact number, but studies have shown that when you learn a language, things don't really stick until you see them a certain number of times. This is true for vocabulary, grammar, whatever it is. I always do my best to help students with this process. I always like to think about what went well, what didn't go well, and if something didn't go well, I like to think about why maybe I made a poor decision about group size, about timing, about how I divided up the groups. Maybe it wasn't a great choice for activity compared with a certain topic or something like that there are many reasons why things don't go well in class. I always like to think about that so I can improve for the next one. I can't really emphasize this enough, so during my years of teaching I've used the same textbooks over and over and over again and it's so helpful to have all those lesson plans, the midterm exams, all the assignments in Google Drive. The other benefit of this is that you teach kind of the same grammar concepts and vocabulary sets over and over again so for example if I see the simple past I think, "oh didn't I make up a fun little board game about the simple past maybe five years ago?" so I'll just do a little search in Google Drive, "oh there's my simple password game!" I can adapt it a little bit based on the vocabulary in that specific book that I'm teaching and then I'm ready to go. So it can save you a ton of time by using Google Drive and saving your lesson plans and all your assignments from year to year!
