Pay for means to spend money on something or someone. If you are maybe out for dinner with your friend, then you go to the bathroom and you come back and you can say "oh did you pay for dinner already?", that means did, you pay the waitress or a cashier at a store or something might ask how do you want to pay for that that means are you using cash or a credit card.
