All About Me ESL Activities and Games

Here are the best all about me ESL games and activities to try out with your students.

#1: All About Me Ball Toss

If you have to have some fun and find out a bit about the students in the process, consider ball toss! Write some questions on the ball in permanent marker, related to getting to know someone. Then, students have to toss the ball around and answer the question of where their right thumb is. Find out more about it: Ball Toss ESL.

#2: How to do a Self Introduction in English

#3: Find Someone Who Bingo

This is the ultimate activity for students to get to know each other and is a nice fit for an “All About Me” lesson. Students have to fill up their boards with things that they think some students will answer yes to, but not everyone. For example, loves junk food, or plays soccer. Learn more: Find Someone Who Bingo Game.

#4: Find Something in Common

This is a nice mixer activity that works well for teenagers and adults. Students have to talk to other students in the class to find something that they have in common. For example, they both love pepperoni pizza or they both play the piano. Students should aim to talk to most of the other students in the class.

Check it out: Find Something in Common Mixer Activity.

#5: Two Truths and a Lie

#6: Group Therapy Icebreaker

This is a nice icebreaker activity to find out what students are nervous about as they start the class. Learn more about it: Group Therapy ESL Icebreaker.

#7: Opinion Activities

People have opinions and it’s a nice way to find out more about someone. Just bring up a few controversial topics and it’ll tell you everything you need to know. Here are some of my top ideas: ESL Opinion Activities.

#8: Surveys

Just ask my students and they’ll tell you that I love to use surveys in my classes! They’re ideal for students to get to know each other and have short conversations. I generally use one on the first day of class as a kind of icebreaker. Find out more about them: ESL Surveys.

#9: All About Me Round Robin Story

This is a nice introduction to an “All about me” lesson plan. Students can help you write a self-introduction for a fictitious person before jumping into writing their own. Learn more: ESL Round Robin Story.

#10: The Memory Circle

A nice way for students to remember names and perhaps a fun fact about the other people in the class is with this memory circle game:

#11: Daily Routine Activities

Someone’s daily routine tells us a lot about who they are! That’s why I love to include this in my all about me lessons. Here are some of the best ideas for incorporating this: Daily Routines ESL Activities.

#12: Man/Woman on the Street Interview Activity

A nice way to find out all about someone is to ask them questions. This makes the standard “interview” someone about themselves and makes it a bit more fun. Find out how: Man/Woman on the Street Interview Activity.

#13: Show and Tell

#14: Dictogloss

This is a challenging listening activity for intermediate or higher-level students. Write your own self-introduction or find one from someone else. Then, put students into pairs and read it out at a faster-than-normal pace. Students have to take some notes and then compare them with their partners. Repeat the process and students try to recreate what they just heard.

This can then lead to students making their own self-introductions. Check it out: Dictogloss.

#15: Fun Debate Topics

Some people love to debate just about anything and it can certainly be a nice way to get to know someone. Check out some of the funniest and most interesting topics to debate about.

#16: Would You Rather Questions

A nice way to get to know someone is to ask them some would you rather questions. Check out this fun resource:

Try out this simple writing activity, geared toward getting to know someone. Students have to give 3 words to another student that will help them get to know them. For example, hobbies, family, and food. Then, the other student has to write about those things in a kind of self-introduction. Check it out: 3 Things.

#18: Plan Your Own “All About Me” Lesson

It’s easier than you might think to plan an ESL lesson about almost any topic, including this one. Here are the simple steps to follow:

#19: Word Association

This is a nice warmer activity for an “All About Me” lesson. Students can brainstorm some categories of things that they might want to know about someone. For example, hobbies, family, favourite foods, schedule, etc. Check it out: ESL Word Association.
